Homeschooling Week 2: Workboxes

Thursday, August 27, 2009

This week has been a busy week with lots of errands.

Here's what our workboxes included:

Monday: beautiful weather, so we headed outside. We drew with chalk and took a walk.

*Beginning consonants worksheet

*Time worksheets
*I had a cut and paste activity in another box, but Abby started writing her letters and numbers, so we went with that. She doesn't like to write, so I was happy to see her working on it. Many times she writes letters and numbers backwards. She has the 3 and S down, but is having trouble with 2 and Z. She also has difficulty with making 9. She starts making it into a P instead.

Tuesday

*Graphing worksheets
*Learning DVD
*Silly Sentences game

Wednesday

*Completed the learning DVD
*Graphing worksheet

*Telling Time flashcards (Abby can now tell time on the hour!)
*Played Go Fish with Littlest Pet Shop cards. They were numbered, so we played the game by asking for the number on the card as well as the animal on the card.

Not bad for being gone from noon until 7 p.m.!

Thursday

*Time worksheet, she is really proud of her new skill!

I bought this workbook at Sam's a few months ago. It was only $7.88.

*Silly Sentences game, too fun not to play again.
*Mom will Read chapter 1 in Abby's choice of chapter book: The Trumpet of the Swan,
The Boxcar Children or Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle.

Update: Abby picked The Boxcar Children and wanted me to keep reading! We read the first 4 chapters!

Thursday is also Abby's gymnastics class.

Friday

*Crayola dry erase board, numbers worksheet.

I got mine at Target, but have seen them many places.

*Mom will read chapter 2.
*Sight words bingo

We are also going out to lunch and to the mall with my sisters and nephews.

To see our week 1 workboxes, click here. Abby is pretty excited about the workboxes. This past Saturday she asked when we were going to do our school work! LOL!

We are still spending about an hour on our schooling. I only fill a few workboxes, because Abby has a short attention span. If I give her too much, she's not interested at all. However, she often turns one activity into another, such as the day she worked on her numbers and letters or the other day when she "wrote" a story with pictures.

At age 5, anything you do is a learning experience! LOL!

Check out more weekly workboxes at Aussie Pumpkin Patch.

That silly sentences game looks really fun! Might have to look into that one for when Joe is a bit older.

My five year old writes some numbers and letters backwards too. I'm just happy that he is writing them because he also does not like to write.

Man oh Man isn't that P hard to learn, with my DD6 the b/d and g/q and of course the P/9 are issues. I read somewhere to not let them finish making the letter, to stop them mid letter and have them re-write it correctly. The idea is to not let their brains get "programmed" forming the letter incorrectly. Unfortunately it is too late for my DD, she is already "programmed" wrong, now I am working on "re-programming"!

Glad you found a system that works for you. And that she likes doing it:) That's always a PLUS:)

My Chris totally loves writing his letters backwards. He wrote the entire alphabet backwards one time:)

I read the first boxcar children book to my 5 year old daughter a few weeks ago...she loved it so much she requested we get more of them and now we have just started book #5! I think we're going to have a hard time pulling her away from this series to read any other chapter books any time soon. :)

Oh so very fun! My six year old isn't big on writing much either, but he reads quite well.
