I got this idea from a workbook my sister has for Matthew. He had a worksheet with an advertisement on it and he answered questions about the sale, products, etc.

What a neat idea and a fun way to incorporate learning in everyday life.

We've received several toy catalogs for the upcoming holidays and Abby goes through each one and circles what she wants. I decided to make a worksheet with a few questions on it for her to do along with the catalog.

The 2009 Toys To Grow On catalog is the one we used for this. I typed up the questions and printed a worksheet. I then read the questions to Abby and she would find and write the answers:
  1. What is the name of the catalog?
  2. How many horses are included in the Fairy Castle Set on page 2?
  3. Find Page 7.
  4. How much is the Gardening Set?
  5. How many paints come in the set on page 12?
  6. Write the colors of the paints.
  7. Find page 25. How much is the Tubtime Fishing set?
  8. What page is the Kitty Corner set on?
Abby and I both enjoyed this activity. I had fun making up the questions and she loved using the toy catalog for her schoolwork.

You could make the questions easier or harder depending on your child's level. Abby learned how to make a dollar sign ($) with this activity! She also practiced her writing and spelling skills.

Oh and on a funny note, we are 12 weeks into our homeschooling and this past week my husband asks, "Why do you take pictures of her doing her schoolwork?"

LOL! Um, I take it he hasn't read the blog lately.

Do you do activities like this? I am going to try to do this once a week.

I LOVE this idea. My kids always circle things they want in catalogs, and this would be a great activity for C! Thanks.

I love "real life" schooling! This is a fabulous idea. Both of my girls can spend hours looking over catalogs {their favorite is American Girl}, so this would be a perfect assignment.

What a great idea! As a mom of three little boys, I'm ALWAYS looking for ways to get creative. We have a school bowl that has all of our favorite 'extras' for school written on little folded pieces of paper. A few times a week they pick a paper out of the bowl and we do something 'out of the ordinary'. I'll definitely be using your idea next week! Thanks!

OK, that is too funny about your husband. Mine NEVER reads my blog:-). He cracks jokes about my picture taking though all the time!

Didn't you get nominated for anything? I was expecting you to, but then couldn't find your blog anywhere. Please let me know if you are and I've just missed it somehow? I'd love to vote for you!
