Homeschooling: Week 11

Myspace Graphics

Is it just me or are the days and weeks just flying by? How can it be November next week?

This week was a bit more relaxed than last week. Whew!

Monday

For some reason I have no recollection of what we did on Monday, I usually write it down, but I guess I forgot. I do remember going to Hobby Lobby. LOL!

Tuesday
Abby did a few thinking skills worksheets and a cut and paste worksheet activity.

She cut out the letters of the alphabet and the pictures and then matched the picture to it's corresponding letter. She flew through this activity, even the cutting, which she usually complains about.

It was a simple activity, but so neat to see how her cutting skills are getting better and how she was able to easily find each letter of the alphabet and a picture to match.

Wednesday
We did this week's stART activity.

Abby also did a few adding worksheets and beginning and ending sounds worksheets. While she was working on them, my sister called and we were talking about how Matthew was doing some school work too. Abby wanted to write words like he was doing, so I tore out another worksheet for her! LOL! This one she had to write the word for the picture. She did really good and spelled the words by herself!

Thursday
Abby had gymnastics in the afternoon and did a few clock and money worksheets, in the evening.

She can now tell and write/draw time by the hour and the worksheets have moved on to the half hour. This was very confusing to her. She kept asking why it's 30, "there's no 3o on this clock", she'd say. Isn't that a hard one to explain!

She also did some short vowel worksheets and a few spelling worksheets.

Abby helped me bake a cake, which is part of our Halloween dessert for my sister's party on Saturday. I think she ate about a cup of batter!

The kids were told to wear their costumes this week for gymnastics. I had Abby put on her cat costume from last year, so it would be easier to do gymnastics in. She still has it on in this picture.

It rained all day Thursday and while we were gone at gymnastics, our house must have been hit with lightning. As the evening went on, we kept finding more things that were effected. The satellite receiver, the router, part of the firewall, something in my husband's computer, a breaker went off and a ground fault was tripped. Oh yeah and the TV in our bedroom is fried! It won't turn on.

Luckily, I was able to get the replacement receiver for free. It was going to be $40, but I pulled the whole "maybe we should cancel our services" thing and got it for free :)

The router will be about $4o and Dave ordered the thing for his computer for about $40. Now the TV in the bedroom will be much more :( However, we will just do without for now. Our deductible is $1,000, so I don't want to to that.

Friday
I woke up to a strange sound the smell of burning plastic. The heater was switching on and off and the thermostat said it was 95 degrees in here. That wasn't right! I had to turn the heater off downstairs and then we found that the thermostat must have been hit by lightning as well...it smelled horrible! When Dave got home from work, he was able to replace that batteries in the thermostat and it started working fine. What I don't understand, is what the burning plastic smell was from. I'm still concerned about it.

Dave also found that another router in the basement was hit. I won't complain too much, because it could have been a lot worse. People have lost their entire house to lightning. Luckily, we were not home at the time, but I bet it was pretty loud. Poor kitty cats!

In the afternoon, Abby and I finished up our Halloween dessert. I'll post more about them and the recipe tomorrow for Simply Made Sunday.

I hope you've had a great week and have a fun and safe Halloween!

Top Five Friday

Friday, October 30, 2009

Christy at Superheroes and Princesses is doing a Top Five Friday about Halloween candy...YUM!

My Top Five Halloween candy picks are:

1. Reese's Peanut Butter Cups

Especially these pumpkin shaped ones. These are the yummiest! There's no hard chocolate ridge around them.

2. Butterfingers
These are messy, but so yummy with a big glass of milk!

3. Junior Mints

Dave and Abby hate these, but they are one of my favorites. I will note that they do not taste that great in brownies. I tried a recipe for Junior Mint brownies that I had found online and they were not liked by anyone.

4. Starburst

It's always nice to have a non-chocolate treat as well. I really like the tropical ones.

5. Nerds

Does Dairy Queen still have the Nerds Blizzards? I used to eat those all of the time. I'm going to have to look into that!

And if you are curious, my least favorites would be: Milky Way, Pay Day, Dots, Whoppers, and M&M's.

What are your Top Five Halloween candies? Check out Christy's list to participate.

stART: Where Is My Broom? Witch Activity

Thursday, October 29, 2009

Our stART project this week was reading Where is My Broom? by Margaret A. Hartelius.

I'll be honest, the only reason I picked this book is because I knew Abby would enjoy these footprint witches I saw at Ramblings of a Crazy Woman. This is the only witch book we have, so we read it! LOL!

Abby wanted nothing to do with it a first, as you can see in the picture above. However, it was a cute book and she enjoyed it. It is short and is a picture reader and she helped me read it.

We then made the footprint witches. We traced each others foot on black paper and cut the footprints out and pasted them on a piece of 12x12 Halloween scrapbook paper. We decorated them with Q-tip arms and googly eyes like Ramblings of a Crazy Woman did.

Then I got out a few other supplies and we put hair on our witches, stars on their dresses and Abby decorated the paper with ribbon and drew brooms and cats for each witch.

I think they turned out so cute! I like doing crafts too, so it was fun for me to participate! LOL!

For more stART projects, head to A Mommy's Adventures.

This is the door to the backyard all decorated with Abby's Halloween projects:

I guess we'll be moving on to Thanksgiving projects next week!

WFMW: Disappearing Nav Bar

Wednesday, October 28, 2009

I was so excited when I saw the tutorial for making a Disappearing Nav Bar on Shabby Blogs last week. I can't stand the Nav Bar, but it does come in handy sometimes.

With a few quick clicks, I now have a Nav Bar that pops up only when I need it! To see it, scroll over the top of my blog where it would normally be.

Isn't that neat?!

Check out Shabby Blogs for the tutorial.

Pumpkin Patch Field Trip

Tuesday, October 27, 2009

Last Wednesday, Abby and I picked up my Dad, younger sister Holly and met my sister and her boys at the pumpkin patch.

Photobucket
Abby called these hat pumpkins

What a day that was! Andrew was good, but he had a pouty face on the whole time.

Photobucket

Abby was being really impatient and kept running from one thing to the next without waiting for us to catch up. She was also harassing Matthew and he wanted nothing to do with that. My poor Dad kept asking how we take them out all of the time? I think if he won the lottery, he wouldn't stay home and be the kid's nanny. LOL!

This picture is them bickering in the wagon. I think they had touched each other. Heaven forbid that would happen!

Photobucket

In general the kids were good, however just having 3 kids along on an outing makes things so much more... uh interesting. :)

Photobucket

We decided to do like what we did last year and just buy a little $1 pumpkin at the pumpkin patch and then head to Sam's for a huge $8.88 one (these would have been around $40 at the pumpkin patch). So, we get to Sam's and look what is where the pumpkins used to be:

Photobucket

No joke! What the heck is that for? I was laughing so hard and I had to get out my camera for that one. It was huge too!

I looked around and guess what? No pumpkins! Now just 3 weeks ago the place was filled with the biggest pumpkins I've ever seen! The good thing is we were all kind of hungry, so we ate some pizza and ice cream. At least we got something out of the trip to Sam's.

I had the customer service desk call other local Sam's and none of them had any either. So no pumpkins for us. Luckily at the wedding we went to a last weekend, they gave us some pumpkins that were used as decorations to take home. They weren't that big, but they will do.

All in all it was a fun, but exhausting day. Next year we will get to the pumpkin patch and Sam's sooner.

Did you notice their turkey shirts? It was nearly impossible to find a brown shirt in a baby's 12 months size. I finally did the night before and made him one to match. The kids will also wear these on Thanksgiving.

In case you are wondering, the turkey is an iron-on applique from Jo-Ann's. It says no sewing is required, but when I washed Abby's the turkey came halfway off. I will stitch around them to keep it on.

Has anyone ever had an iron-on applique actually stay on?

I ♥ Faces Week 42: Halloween Dress Up

Photobucket

I love this picture of my Memaw and Abby at my sister's Halloween party in 2005. My Memaw has since passed, but I am so thankful that Abby got to meet her and still remembers her.

Abby was Strawberry Shortcake's cat, Custard (I was Strawberry Shortcake). My Memaw loved to paint and was always making crafts. The shirt she has on, she painted and it was one of my favorites.

I miss my Memaw everyday, but I always remember her smile!

Homeschooling Week 10

Saturday, October 24, 2009

Photobucket

I am linking up to My Family My Forever's Learning Through Love weekly link up! Go check it out!

Monday

Since Abby was sick on Sunday, we stayed home and didn't do much. In the late afternoon, we did this week's stART project. Abby then painted pictures with all of the other paints.

Tuesday

Abby used Math U See blocks
to figure out a math problem worksheet.

She also did a few other worksheets including: rhyming pairs, word recognition and short vowels.

Wednesday

We took a trip to the Pumpkin Patch! This was pretty much an all day event. I'll post more about it and pictures next week.

Thursday

Matthew and Abby had gymnastics and then we headed out to get Matthew a haircut. We also went to Target together.

Abby played with playdough in the evening and also did some copy work. She wanted to plan a tea party and write out invitations, so I wrote down what she wanted them to say and then had her copy what I wrote onto the other invitations. This is fun, because she has no idea she is actually learning! LOL

Right before we left for gymnastics, I was combing her hair and she said, "Mom it's 12 o'clock!" I looked up and sure enough it was! I was so happy that she was able to take what she's learned and read a real clock! Ours has roman numerals on it, so that was pretty cool.

Friday

Another full day. We went over to my sister's for lunch and hung out there until early evening. Abby and Matthew had fun playing, while Heather and I worked on her house a bit.

After bath and dinner, Abby played JumpStart on Wii. She really enjoys it and it's a learning game!

We have a birthday party this afternoon and will get together with my parents either this evening or tomorrow.

I can't believe Halloween is a week away! Can you? I guess the scariest part is that means Christmas is right around the corner. 2 months from tomorrow actually! Time to get shopping!

If you have a learning post you'd like to link up with, head to My Family My Forever to participate.

Thanks!

stART: The Teeny Tiny Ghost

Thursday, October 22, 2009

For our stART project this week, we read The Teeny Tiny Ghost by Kay Winters.

It's about a shy little (teeny tiny) ghost that overcomes his fears. It was a cute story, but about 3/4 of the way through, Abby said: How many times are they going to say teeny tiny?!" I laughed so hard!

She was really interested in this book and sat for the whole thing. That says a lot right there. After reading The Teeny Tiny Ghost, we decided to do some ghost projects.

First was making ghost prints on black paper with a ghost cookie cutter and white paint:

Photobucket

Photobucket

While Abby was making these, I decided to make a few fingerprint ghosts. Abby loved that idea and filled up the paper! I used black puffy paint to make the faces.

Photobucket

Photobucket

I then stole an idea from my sister and traced our hand prints on white paper. I cut them out and made faces...Hand print ghosts! Such a cute idea!

Photobucket

For more stART projects, head to A Mommy's Adventures. Also say a prayer for her baby Juliette, who is home from the hospital after a kidney infection.

Wordful Wednesday

Wednesday, October 21, 2009

My cousin Kylee got married this past weekend and at the reception they had karaoke. Abby decided she wanted to sing her own song. She got in front of everyone and said, "Hi everyone! I had a song to sing to all of you, but I forgot it." I couldn't think of anything, so I told her to sing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and she did. It was so cute! Everyone gave her a huge round of applause!

Photobucket

I don't know where she gets this from. I was and still am kind of shy. There is no way I'd want to talk in front of a whole room looking at me, much less sing!

If you love pictures like me (even of strangers), here's a slideshow from the wedding:

An update on Abby: She did fine through the night on Sunday and woke up Monday completely back to herself. I still am not sure what caused the vomiting, but I'm glad it was short lived!

I ♥ Faces Week 41: PINK Week

Monday, October 19, 2009

I ♥ Faces is honoring those who have been faced with breast cancer or knows someone who has by sponsoring a "Pink Week". I do not personally know anyone that has been effected with breast cancer, however I truly hope there is a cure for it someday soon.

Homeschooling Week 9

Sunday, October 18, 2009

Abby woke up this morning and was very lethargic and just not herself. She was up late last night and Friday night, so we figured she was just tired. After she ate a bit of breakfast, she started vomiting :(

It was terrible, she hasn't had a stomach problem for over 3 years! We had an out of town wedding last night, so we were at the hotel and still at breakfast in the lobby. We got her up to the room and thought she was done, but then she continued. Of course, I first thought of the swine flu, how could you not! I called the doctor's exchange and they said vomiting isn't a symptom of it. I've since checked online and they are wrong. However, she has no other symptoms and did stop vomiting within a few hours. It's 4:30 p.m. on Sunday and she has eaten a whole banana and 8 ounces of Pedialyte and kept them down. She's also talking more.

On another note, we were supposed to leave tomorrow for Florida, however my in-laws called last week and said that the H1N1 virus has really gotten bad near them. They were worried about Abby getting it, since a 9 year old girl in their area got it and is now in the ICU. She was healthy the day before.

We decided since we are flying, we'd better stay home. To me, airplanes are a major breeding ground for germs. Luckily, we were able to use the money from the tickets towards new ones. For only $90 more we made plans to go in April. Hopefully by then the flu scares will be over.

Funny how things work, because after her vomiting today, we would have had to cancel it anyway.

Now on to what we've been up to this week:

Monday

Columbus Day is a bank holiday and my husband works at a bank. I didn't wake up until noon, because I was so tired from all of the driving the day before on the way home from Schaumburg.

We then went out and ran some errands.

Tuesday

We took my younger sister to the dentist. I brought along worksheets again. Abby did a few sequencing worksheets, handwriting practice worksheets and a few about same vs. different.

Wednesday

A few clock worksheets about digital vs. analog clocks.
Tanogram patterns
This week's stART project
I found this in the workbox when I woke up:

Abby said she wanted to do some Barbie worksheets! LOL!

Thursday

Gymnastics
Library

Friday

Since we had a wedding to attend Saturday, I had to run out and find a top to wear. I had completely forgot I didn't have anything. I also needed to find Abby some black shoes. You may remember that Abby has picky feet, so I ran to Target and bought some black ballet slippers.

We then picked up my younger sister Holly and met Heather and Matthew at the mall. The kids made the Autumn Hugs bear. It is so cute:

Abby named her's Pumpkin Pie Fall Leaves and Matthew's was named LegoBear. Holly made the Spooky Kitty and dressed it in the little witch outfit!

We also had lunch at Chick-Fil-A and I found a top to wear to the wedding. Then it was off to home to pick up Dave for the circus. That was one busy day!

Next week, since we won't be out of town my sister and I are thinking of taking the kids to the pumpkin patch. Hopefully Abby's tummy troubles are behind her and we can go out by Wednesday.

Have you been to the pumpkin patch yet?
