New Leaf Publishing Childrens Book Reviews

Tuesday, October 5, 2010

I was recently contacted by New Leaf Publishing to do a book review.  I had not heard of this company before but after checking out their site, I was very excited to be able to review a few of their childrens books.

The first book is titled Not Too Small at All:  A Mouse Tale, by Stephanie Z. Townsend.

This book was adorable!  Abby and I both love the light and soft illustrations.  The story is told by a Grandpa mouse to his little mouse grandchildren of how he struggled to find his purpose.  After many frustrations, he found his way onto Noah's Ark and was able to help someone.  He was reminded that God made him perfectly the way he was...to be a mouse...and that no other creature is like him.

The moral of the story is that God made us perfect the way we are and that children can do big things, even though they are small.

The next book was Charlie and Trike in the Grand Canyon Adventure by Ken Ham and Karen Hansel.

When I first flipped through this book, I was very pleased by the many lift-the-flap and pull out pages.  There are little maps, books, journals, etc. through out this book.  I did wonder what Abby would think of it though.  She's not really into dinosaurs.

However, upon my reading it she became very interested and enjoyed the interactive feel of the book.  The maps and notebooks were really fun to her.

The story is of a monkey (Charlie) and a dinosaur (Trike) who go on a tour of the Grand Canyon.  During their adventures, Charlie is contemplating whether the bible is true and what that means.  They learn all about the Grand Canyon and how the great flood covered it.  They find fossils and discuss the rock formations and how they got there.  Trike helps Charlie realize that God made it all and the bible is true, because there is real evidence in the Grand Canyon to prove it.  By the end of the book, Charlie is able to trust that God and the bible are real.

One note I will make is that the books discussed dinosaurs.  I am 30 years old and have never thought that dinosaurs were on Noah's Ark or that they existed when humans existed.  Abby wasn't phased by it at all, but it did make me wonder.  I wanted to mention this, because my sister told me that my nephew was pretty freaked at the thought of humans and dinosaurs walking on earth at the same time.  I have to agree, that would have been pretty scary!

Thanks again to New Leaf Publishing for providing both of these books for us to review.  I was not paid for this post and these are my honest opinions.

Great reviews. I think those books would be a hit here too.

I wouldn't like the idea of walking on earth with dinosaurs either!
